Buses get rerouted because of downtown sinkhole
Tue, 6 Jan 2009 21:15:57 EST    Comment   Cobb Community Transit is rerouting six bus routes in downtown Atlanta because of a sinkhole next to the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center. The sinkhole, which is about 15 yards long, is on one of the north-bound lanes on Forsyth Street, between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Alabama Street. CCT Buses will not stop at two locations on that portion of Forsyth Street. Passengers can catch the bus at the corner of Pryor and Alabama streets or at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Forsyth Street.
2 Atlanta elementaries targeted for closing
Tue, 6 Jan 2009 20:04:32 EST    Comment   Atlanta school officials have proposed closing two elementary schools and merging two others at the end of the school year. The move to shut down Blalock and Williams elementary schools comes as nearby Bankhead Courts and Bowen Homes housing developments are closing. The system also proposed merging Hope and Hill elementary schools in the Old Fourth Ward because of declining student enrollment. "It is no longer financially viable to keep these schools open the way they are," district spokesman Joe Manguno said.

Police spokesman Eric Schwartz said he did not know the names of the two suspects, but said they were both injured and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The two victims in the other car, including a 12-year-old boy, also were taken to Grady.
Most of Margaret Mitchell House staff laid off
Tue, 6 Jan 2009 18:48:36 EST    Comment   The Atlanta History Center cut 15 employees from its 74-member staff on Monday as part of a museum-wide belt-tightening. Though staff reductions are not a thunderous surprise in this economy, the fact that seven of those let go were employees of the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum -- reducing its staff to a single person -- set off alarms among aficionados. Opened as a historic landmark in 1997, the house where author Margaret Mitchell penned most of "Gone with The Wind" has become an important literary hub. Not only a host to established authors, it has created many programs to encourage writing and reading.

Tue, 6 Jan 2009 17:31:42 EST    Comment   Fulton County police continued to search Tuesday for information about a drive-by shooting that wounded a 7-year-old girl. The girl, whose name was released, was shot once in the neck Sunday night as she watched television at a friend's house in South Fulton County, said Fulton County Police spokeswoman Kay Lester. Lester said Tuesday the child remained in the intensive care unit at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston but she was expected to recover from the gunshot to her neck.
No auction as Morris Brown seeks foreclosure deal
Tue, 6 Jan 2009 17:25:35 EST    Comment   The scheduled sale of a Morris Brown College building in foreclosure is off, at least until next month. The college was given a reprieve Tuesday, barely two hours before Jordan Hall was to be auctioned on the steps of the Fulton County Courthouse, according to an attorney involved in the matter. "Essentially there was agreement to give them a little time," said the lawyer, Gregory Worthy. "This is not for some long period of time, this is just delayed for the moment."

Tue, 6 Jan 2009 12:50:25 EST    Comment   Lawyers for the mother of T.I.'s sons say the rapper owes an $8,000 attorney bill in a custody case. T.I. is scheduled to appear in Fulton County Superior Court on the matter Tuesday. The two-time Grammy winner was ordered in September to pay more than $3,000 a month to LaShon Dixon — to whom he had been paying about $2,000 per month — as well as the boys' private school tuition, uninsured medical bills and expenses related to the children's extracurricular activities.
